A Range of Emotions

Range of Emotions~By: Debbie Christopher

Each week I have a special time and place set aside to spend in prayer and reflection as I pour out requests, needs, and praises regarding the previous week and current and upcoming concerns for the following week. (No, this is not the only time I pray throughout the week😳)

During this prayer time earlier this month, my thoughts covered a wide variety of emotions.

  • Two sheriff deputies from our neighboring county were killed in the line of duty. Our entire community wept. There were several small details that made the occasion extra painful for me personally. I wept as I followed the news and viewed the funeral and processions. This reflection brought sadness, grief, fear, and even a personal breath of thanksgiving through the tears during my ‘special time’ with the Lord.

  • A family member experienced a tough situation that brought tears involving a different set of bittersweet emotions.  This event brought concern for those involved, and  yet, pride for the wisdom, courage, and maturity demonstrated as a result.

  • Our eldest granddaughter said, ‘YES!’ and is now a fiancé—now engaged to a most wonderful, sweet young man whom we love dearly. This time, tears of happiness, joy, and anticipation!

  • God lovingly showed His goodness as my hubby ‘sadly’ traded in his beloved truck that had ‘run its course’ and fulfilled its purpose. In return, God blessed with an awesome deal and opportunity that made it all possible. Praise, thankfulness, excitement…

  • And, the next week…our youngest granddaughter turned 13! Questioning how THAT can even be possible!

As I reflected on this wild week of emotions, I was left with one thought regarding my prayer as I wrapped things up…I prayed, “Lord, please allow the events and emotions of this week bring honor to you. Please provide peace to all affected by these events and may these emotions and circumstances guide them, us, and me to grow stronger in our faith and graciously fulfill your purpose in our lives.”

Sadness, fear, grief, pride, concern, joy, anticipation, excitement, thanksgiving, praise…

If you are experiencing a wide range of emotions and just don’t know what to do…consider the prayer above and these verses:

Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.“

‭‭1 Thessalonians‬ ‭5‬:‭18‬ ‭ESV‬‬

“Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort. He comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any kind of affliction, through the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For as the sufferings of Christ overflow to us, so through Christ our comfort also overflows.”

‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭1‬:‭3‬-‭5‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

In all circumstances…
