By: Debbie Christopher ~~So, at first you might giggle at the possible ‘cheesiness’ of my choice…but, I trust everyone sees and contemplates on just how accurate this truly is.
As I was reviewing past ‘words’ I’ve emphasized in previous New Year’s posts—confidence, hope, gracious, opportunity, hindsight, et al—I asked myself, ‘What word do I want to focus on this year?’
That question hit me like the lasagna noodle in the antacid commercial from years past, and I decided to make my word of the year…
Word
I want to focus on God’s Word this year.
When we truly think about it, all the words I’ve emphasized in the past are discussed in God’s Word—The Bible.
The best place to see what the Bible says about The Word of God is to read, study, focus on, and apply Psalm 119. This long Psalm contains 176 verses about God’s Word. Several synonyms are used, so look for words like: instructions, commands, precepts, statutes, decrees, and other such synonyms. Specifically, consider verse 105…
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
Psalm 119:105 ESV
God’s Word is, indeed, the Word we need to focus on throughout this new year as it is the ‘word’ that actually lights our way.
As we consider Psalm 119, let’s also consider 2 Timothy 3:16-17 which states that all Scripture is inspired by God—thus, God’s Word—and is beneficial for us. How?
Beneficial for doctrine—teaching us Who God is and what He says (John 1:1-14).
Beneficial for reproof—let’s us know when we’ve fallen off track, strayed from what He says…guilty conscience (Hebrews 4:12).
Beneficial for correction—tells us how to get back on track (Psalm 119:11)
Beneficial to seeking righteousness (Matthew 6:33).
Here’s a sampling of what else you’ll find as you focus on God’s Word.
Life principles can be found in The Proverbs.
Scripture answers the head-scratching life questions we ask so often as discussed in my recent blog post—Now, He’s Making You.
Most importantly, God’s plan of mercy and grace—and Hope—are threaded throughout the entire Bible. I encourage you to read through Romans and the Gospel of John for a sneak peak.
So, what word should we focus on this year? God’s Word…
Let the Word guide your steps!
~Debbie
